Friday's forecast: Stormy in West, South

The two weather trouble spots Friday will be the West and the South.

West: Much of the Northwestern portion of the country will be stormy on Friday. Coastal and valley rain and mountain snow is likely in northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Nevada.

South: Rain and a few thunderstorms will drench most of Texas and the Deep South Friday. The heaviest rain will be in Louisiana. Florida will be warm and dry.

Great Lakes: Some light snow showers are likely in western New York and northeastern Minnesota Friday. The rest of the region will be clear and chilly.

Weather history for Dec. 19: In 1924, the temperature dropped to -59 degrees, the USA's all-time coldest December temperature. In 1948, 7.4 inches of snow fell in Philadelphia during the NFL title game, won by the Eagles 7-0 over the Chicago Cardinals.

In 2009, a massive snowstorm blasted the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, bringing record-breaking snow totals to Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
