Thursday's forecast: Snowy, soggy across the South

A storm will slog across the southern U.S. Thursday, dropping snow in the Southwest and rain in the South. Another storm will hit the Northwest.

Southern tier: Morning snow will continue in New Mexico and west Texas. By the afternoon and evening, rain will pelt much of eastern Texas and lower Mississippi Valley.

West: Heavy coastal and valley rain and mountain snow will fall in Washington and Oregon. Northern Idaho will see snow. California will be sunny and mild.

East Coast: Most of the East, from New England to Florida, will be clear and dry on Thursday. Temperatures will range from the 20s and 30s in New England to the 80s in Florida.

Weather history for Jan. 22: In 1957, a tornado hit near Gans, Okla., killing nine people. A refrigerator was tossed 1/4 of a mile. In 1982, 18 inches of snow buried Minneapolis, paralyzing the city.

In 1989, the high temperature in Chandalar Lake, Alaska, was -66 degrees. In 2009, a record high of 73 degrees was set in Goodland, Kan.
