Friday's forecast: Big, messy storm for the South

A large, messy storm will bring heavy rain and some frozen precipitation to much of the southeastern U.S. on Friday, while another storm hits the Northwest.
South: Moderate to heavy rain will drench the South on Friday, all the way from Texas to southern Virginia. Some thunderstorms are possible in northern Florida and southern Georgia. Snow and sleet are likely in portions of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.
The storm will slide into the Mid-Atlantic by the evening and into the Northeast on Saturday.
Central U.S.: Other than some light snow around the Great Lakes, most of the central U.S. will be clear and cool on Friday.
West: Rain and snow are again forecast in the Pacific Northwest. Most of California and the rest of the Southwest will be warm and dry. Winds could be an issue in southern California.
Weather history for Jan. 23: In 1916, the temperature fell from 44 degrees in the morning to -56 degrees in the evening in Browning, Mont., a world-record one-day drop of 100 degrees.
In 1971, the USA's all-time coldest temperature of -79.8 degrees was recorded in Prospect Creek, Alaska. In 2007, a record high of 85 degrees was set in Miami.
