Thursday's forecast: Heavy rain for West Coast

Heavy rain will pelt the Northwest and northern California on Thursday, while a fresh blast of arctic air roars into the East.

West: Northern California, Oregon and Washington will all receive a drenching rain on Thursday. Flooding and mudslides are possible where the rain is heaviest. Southern California and the Southwest will stay warm and dry.

East: A blast of frigid air will roar into the north-central and northeastern U.S. on Thursday, with highs only in the teens and 20s. Light snow is forecast in parts of the Midwest, the Appalachians, and Northeast, while heavy snow is expected in Maine.

South: A cool day is on tap for most of the Southeast. Showers are likely in much of Florida.

Weather history for Feb. 5: In 1923, the temperature dropped to -65 degrees in Doucet, Quebec, the coldest reading ever recorded in the province of Quebec. In 1991, the temperature rose to a record high of 73 degrees in Washington, D.C.
