Wednesday's forecast: Cold blast for north-central US

A cold, snowy day is likely in the north-central states while snow and rain falls in parts of the Southwest.

North-central U.S.: Very cold temperatures and some light snow will make for a wintry day in the northern Plains and around the Great Lakes.

West: Some rain and snow showers are forecast in New Mexico and Colorado Wednesday. Most of the West Coast will be clear and dry, though strong winds of up to 50 mph are expected in southern California.

East: The East Coast will be dry and sunny on Wednesday, the last relatively mild day before a cold blast approaches on Thursday.

Weather history for Feb. 11: In 1983, a blizzard dumped 22.8 inches in Baltimore and 21.3 inches in Philadelphia. In 1999, Detroit rose to a February record high temperature of 70 degrees.
