A messy winter storm will pelt the Southeast on Tuesday while bitter cold continues in the northeastern U.S.

Southeast: Sleet, snow and freezing rain will fall from Arkansas to North Carolina. Atlanta should see a messy morning commute. Rain is also forecast along the Gulf Coast, though Florida will stay warm and dry.

Northern tier: Light snow will fly in the upper Midwest and around the Great Lakes. Bitterly cold temperatures in the teens and 20s will make for a chilly day across the most of the northeastern U.S.

West: Other than some snow in the Four Corners region, the West will be clear and dry on Tuesday.

Weather history for Feb. 24: In 1936, muddy rain fell on northern New York and brown snow fell across Vermont and New Hampshire due to dust storms in the Plains.

In 1985, New York City rose to 75 degrees, tying its February record high temperature. Boston also set a monthly record as it soared to 70 degrees.
