Severe storms could rattle the central Plains Wednesday while winter hangs on across the northern tier.

Central U.S.: Severe thunderstorms, along with the threat of tornadoes, are likely to hit the Plains on Wednesday. States where the storms could be the worst include Kansas and Missouri. The northern Plains will be quite cool, only in the 40s.

East: Most of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic will be cloudy, chilly and damp on Wednesday thanks to a back-door cold front sliding across the region. Snow is possible in New York and New England as temperatures stay in the 30s and 40s. The Southeast and Florida will be very warm and humid.

West: Other than some light snow in the northern Rockies, the western third of the country will be clear and dry on Wednesday.

Weather history for April 8: In 1991, both New York City (90 degrees) and Baltimore (91) set record high temperatures. In 1998, an F5 tornado ripped into central Alabama, killing 30 people and destroying 100 homes.
