Thursday's forecast: Soggy in the Plains, Southeast

Severe storms will lash the central U.S. on Thursday while more rain drenches the Southeast and snow falls in the Rockies.

Central U.S.: Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and large hail are forecast across the southern Plains. Areas from western Kansas to the Texas Gulf Coast are at greatest risk for severe weather.

East, South: Almost the entire eastern third of the country could see some wet weather at some point on Thursday. Thunderstorms and heavy rain will fall in the the Southeast and central Gulf Coast. The rain will hold off until afternoon and evening in the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atantic and Northeast.

West: Heavy snow will fall in the central Rockies while most of the rest of the West is dry and clear on Thursday.

Weather history for April 16: In 1880, a tornado picked up a house in Marshall, Mo., and carried it 10 miles. In 2002, Alpena, Mich., soared to 90 degrees, tying a record high for April.
