Yet another day of strong to severe storms will wallop the Plains on Friday. Wind and rain are likely in the Southeast coast from a developing tropical system.

Plains: Severe thunderstorms will produce large hail, strong winds and even a few tornadoes in the central and southern Plains. Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kan., are the big cities at greatest risk.

East: Wind and rain should cause problems in coastal areas of the Carolinas. Most of the rest of the eastern third of the nation should see clear skies.

West: The Southwest and the Rockies will see some spotty showers. Light snow will fall in the high elevations of the central and northern Rockies.

Weather history for May 8: In 1947, a trace of snow fell in Philadelphia, the city's latest snow on record. In 1979, eight tornadoes hit the Tampa area, killing 17 people.

In 2000, Providence, R.I., hit a record high of 91 degrees.
