Wednesday's forecast: Steamy, hot in the East; more rain for Plains

Steamy, summerlike heat will spread over the East Wednesday while the southern Plains sees a few more showers and storms.

East: Humidity will be high on Wednesday throughout the eastern half of the country as highs soar into the 80s as far north as New England. Some showers and thunderstorms are possible from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes, mainly in the Appalachians.

Central U.S.: A few showers and thunderstorms are again possible in the southern Plains, with the heaviest rain likely in sodden Oklahoma. The northern Plains and upper Midwest will be warm and dry.

West: Most of the western third of the country will be clear, though some light afternoon showers are possible in the central and northern Rockies.

Weather history for May 27: In 1771, the Great James River flood swamped Virginia, killing 150 people. Thomas Jefferson called it the "greatest flood ever known."

In 1994, snow fell in northern New England. In 2006, Imperial, Neb., soared to a record high of 101 degrees.
