Severe storms could rock the Plains on Thursday while the mid-Atlantic sees a dreary, cool day.

Plains: Severe thunderstorms are forecast to rattle the central and northern Plains. Hail and high winds are the main threats. The southern Plains will be clear and warm, more good news for the waterlogged region.

East: The Northeast will see pleasantly cool weather, while the mid-Atlantic will be damp and showery. The Southeast and Florida will be warm with a slight chance of thunderstorms.

West: Other than some showers in the Great Basin and the northern Rockies, the remainder of the western third of the nation will be clear and dry.

Weather history for June 4: In 1825, an early season hurricane hit Long Island. The storm caused damage from the Carolinas to New York. In 1980, tornadoes destroyed a large part of Grand Island, Neb.

In 2006, Parker, Ariz., soared to a record high temperature of 115 degrees.
