Tuesday's forecast: Drenching rain and blistering heat

Drenching rain will soak portions of the central U.S. on Tuesday, which could lead to flash flooding. Blistering heat will scorch the Southeast and Southwest.
Central U.S.: Heavy, tropical rains will soak eastern Texas. Flash flooding is likely in many areas. Severe storms are possible in the northern Plains, with high winds and large hail the main threats.
West: Most of the western third of the nation will be clear on Tuesday. Searing heat will bake the Desert Southwest as highs skyrocket into the 110s in parts of California and Arizona.
East: A cold front gliding to the East Coast will trigger showers and storms on Tuesday in the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast. The Southeast will be miserably hot and humid with only some scattered showers in Florida providing some relief.

In 1939, hundreds of tiny frogs fell in a heavy shower in Trowbridge, England. On June 15-16, 1995, the world record for a two-day rainfall was set in Cherrapunji, India. Over 98 inches (that's 8 feet) fell.
