Friday's forecast: Sizzling heat West, rain, storms central U.S.

Sizzling heat will scorch the West on Friday while much of the central and eastern U.S. deals with rainy, stormy conditions.

West: Full sunshine and blazing heat will make for a rough day in the western third of the country on Friday. Highs will skyrocket into the 100s from the Desert Southwest up into Oregon and Washington.

Central U.S: Heavy rain will drench portions of the central Plains and Ohio Valley, with the heaviest rain likely in Missouri. Flash floods are possible in some areas. Severe storms could also rattle areas from Oklahoma up into the Ohio Valley.

East: Somewhat cooler air will make for a pleasant day in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Some showers are possible throughout the eastern seaboard Friday from the Mid-Atlantic to Florida.

Weather history for June 26: In 1990, Phoenix soared to its all-time record high temperature of 122 degrees. In 1994, an all-time record high was set in Albuquerque, N.M. (107 degrees).
