Tuesday's forecast: Hot in West, scattered storms in Midwest, East

Scattered thunderstorms will pelt portions of the eastern U.S. Tuesday while the western heat wave continues.
Central, eastern U.S.: Scattered thunderstorms, primarily in the afternoon, will drench portions of the Great Lakes, Upper Midwest, Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast on Tuesday. None of the storms are forecast to reach severe levels. The Plains will be very hot and dry.
West: Heat will continue across most of the western USA, except right along the coast. Widespread 100+ degree temperatures are likely for the lower elevations of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, and California. A few showers and storms are possible in the Rockies and Great Basin.
Weather history for June 30: In 1972, Concord, N.H., dropped to 30 degrees, an all-time June record low. In 2012, Atlanta hit its all-time record high temperature of 106 degrees.
