Wednesday's forecast: Soggy central, eastern U.S.

The nation will be divided Wednesday into a soggy, humid eastern U.S. and clear, hot West.

Central, eastern U.S.: A cold front will continue its slow march across the central and eastern U.S. on Wednesday, triggering showers and thunderstorms in the Midwest at midday and the East Coast and Southeast by the afternoon and evening.

Some severe storms are possible in Michigan and the Ohio Valley. The Upper Midwest will be in the chilly 50s, 60s and low 70s.

West: Practically the entire western half of the nation will be sunny and hot, except for right along the coast, where temperatures will be cooler.

Weather history for Aug. 19: In 1935, the temperature rose to 100 degrees in Collegeville, Nova Scotia, the province's all-time record high temperature. In 1991, Hurricane Bob roared into New England with wind gusts of up to 125 mph.
