Friday's forecast: Snow for western, central U.S.

Snow will fly across portions of the western and central U.S. on Friday. The East will see typical early January temperatures.

Central U.S.: Light snow could lead to travel problems in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest Friday. A few thunderstorms could rumble in the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.

West: Light rain will soak California while snow plasters the mountains. High temperatures will only be in the frigid teens in the northern Rockies.

East: Rain is likely in portions of the Gulf Coast and Florida on Friday. A seasonal cold, cloudy early January day is forecast for the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
