Forecast: More wind, cold at the Masters
Wind continued to bedevil golfers at the Masters in Augusta, Ga., on Friday, and another breezy day is forecast Saturday.
The opening day of the tournament Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club recorded winds in the 15-20 mph range, with frequent gusts reaching 30 mph. A nearby airport tallied one gust at 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Only 20 of the 89 golfers finished under par for the day as a result of the weather. There were nine scores in the 80s — more than the eight in the 60s — and four more at 79, according to Paste BN Sports reporter Steve DiMeglio. The course played to an average of 74.16.
As of midday Friday, only a few golfers were shooting under par for the second round.
Friday's winds will stay in the 13-17 mph range. Saturday's winds should be around 9-17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph, according to the weather service.
Winds will subside Sunday, but early morning frost on the course could delay play. A freeze watch, meaning conditions are ideal for temperatures to dip below 32 degrees, is in effect for Augusta from 3 a.m. until 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
"The big story Sunday is no wind," AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Kottlowski said. "It will be the one day in which the wind will not be a factor."
High temperatures will reach the 60s each day. Normal high temperatures in Augusta at this time are in the mid-70s. No rain is forecast for the remainder of the tournament.
