North and South Carolina brace for severe weather as thunderstorms, tornado alerts issued

North Carolina and South Carolina are among the many east coast states with tornado watches in place as severe weather hits the area.

Wind gusts at speeds of 40 mph are expected across multiple cities in the Forsyth County area of northwest North Carolina on Monday, the National Weather Service reported.

A thunderstorm watch is in place for parts of North Carolina as well as South Carolina and Georgia, the NWS reports.

Thunderstorms across the Piedmont in South Carolina will contain damaging wind guests up to 70 mph with possible hail up to 1 inch in diameter, and even isolated tornadoes. The NWS said residents in the area should be prepared to take shelter.

The NWS forecast a severe weather outbreak will expand parts of the eastern U.S. on Monday. Local damaging winds and tornados are expected across the southern/central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic States.
