Steve Wiggins became a flight attendant "by accident."
He used to be a professional pianist. But after 30 years, he wanted a career that would allow him the flexibility to perform, but also provide him with travel, health and retirement benefits.
And one day, just before a Southwest Airlines flight home from a music conference in Los Angeles, Wiggins met a flight attendant in line at the food court in Houston; she invited him to sit with the flight crew and eat lunch.
The interaction gave Wiggins the idea for his next chapter.
"It was during our conversation over lunch that she asked me if I had ever thought about becoming a flight attendant. I said, 'No, tell me about the job.' She said she thought I would be great," he said. "So here I am – a wonderful accidental career!"
At first, he joined a regional airline; but he recently completed the hiring and training process with Southwest. He said he is "happily employed."
"One of my favorite things about the job is the view and the ability to incorporate one of [my] favorite hobbies," he said, adding that he has always loved photography.
Wiggins commutes out of Panama City Beach in Florida and said he tries to grab a window seat when he's flying to his base or returning home.
Wiggins said he has a collection of several thousand photos from his travels, all collected from 10,000 to 40,000 feet in the air. He started taking photos after high school, and throughout his career and travels as a musician.
"I believe I have found a favorite subject now with my flight attendant job: 'Skyscapes,' a view from above!"
